For more than 250 years, every giraffe on the planet was treated as a single species. In August 2025, the IUCN's Giraffe and Okapi Specialist Group overturned that assumption, formally recognizing four genetically distinct giraffe species based on more than a decade of genomic research. That

One
Species Becomes Four
Until
2025, giraffes were classified as Giraffa camelopardalis with up to nine
subspecies, a system largely unchanged since Linnaeus in 1758. That began to
shift in 2016, when early genetic studies suggested deeper divisions than
anyone expected. A continent-wide genomic study led by the Giraffe Conservation
Foundation and Germany's Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre,
involving tissue samples collected across 21 African countries including
politically unstable regions like Chad, South Sudan and Niger eventually

The

The
Neck Debate Darwin Never Settled
The
obvious question about any giraffe why the neck is so long turns out to be more
contested among scientists than most people realize. The traditional
explanation, dating to Darwin, holds that long necks evolved so giraffes could
reach foliage unavailable to shorter browsers, avoiding competition for food.
A
1996 study by Robert Simmons and Lue Scheepers challenged that idea directly,
pointing out that giraffes actually spend much of their time feeding from low
shrubs with their necks bent, not stretched toward treetops, and that females
who don't fight have proportionally different neck investment than males. They
proposed instead that neck length evolved through sexual selection: male

fossil study of ancient giraffe relatives, published in Science, added

mechanisms as plausible contributors rather than fully competing explanations.
A
Cardiovascular System That Shouldn't Work
Whatever
drove its evolution, a giraffe's neck creates a genuine physiological problem:
getting blood up to a brain positioned several meters above the heart, then
coping with what should happen when the head drops down to drink. A giraffe's
heart generates blood pressure of roughly 200 mmHg more than double a healthy
human's just to maintain adequate blood flow to the brain against gravity.
That
creates an obvious hazard whenever a giraffe lowers its head to a waterhole.
Blood pressure at the brain should spike sharply, and it should crash again
just as sharply when the head lifts back up enough, in theory, to cause a
human-style fainting spell. Giraffes rarely show any such distress. Researchers
studying the mechanism have found that when a giraffe's head drops, blood pools
in large veins in the neck, temporarily storing more than a liter of blood and
reducing the volume returning to the heart; the heart responds by pumping less
forcefully while the head is down, then delivers a stronger beat as the head
rises, timed to counteract the pressure swing. The giraffe's unusually tight
skin, acting something like a natural compression garment, is thought to help
keep blood from pooling excessively in the lower limbs as well. Even with these
mechanisms mapped in some detail, researchers studying giraffe cardiovascular
physiology say the full picture of how giraffes avoid injury from this daily
pressure swing isn't completely resolved.
The
Silent Extinction Hiding Behind One Label
Giraffe
numbers have fallen by roughly 30 to 40 percent over the past three decades,
dropping from an estimated 155,000–163,000 individuals in 1985 to closer to
97,000 by 2015, before recovering somewhat to current estimates around
117,000–140,000 thanks to targeted conservation work. Giraffes have already
disappeared entirely from at least seven African countries, and their
historical range has shrunk by close to 90 percent over the past three
centuries.
Conservationists
